The British and French shawl industry began in the eighteenth century with the reproduction of high quality hand-made imported Kashmir shawls from India. The Indian shawls, made of cashmere wool from goats and sometimes of antique manufacture were expensive gifts for women, often to celebrate a betrothal or wedding, which acted to feminise the exotic and soon became heirlooms. They frequently appeared in nineteenth-century fiction as a metaphor for luxury, taste and old wealth.
